1. Get organized.

A list on time can save you a lot of headaches. Moving entails a million tasks, some very obvious and others not so much. However, the best thing is to write down absolutely everything, no matter how obvious the task, so that you do not forget anything. Even if it is an insignificant detail (like to whom you are going to give away those books that you have decided that you are not going to take) it is better to have it jolted down.

Take note of everything you think you will need for the move as well (boxes, bags, bubble paper, etc.) so you only have to make a trip to the hardware store, and avoid finding yourself desperate at ten p.m. before the move trying to find an open place to buy something that you have forgotten. And do not forget to buy some things “just in case”; better to be safe than sorry.

Try to keep the list always with you, for example, in a mobile app, to be able to write down anything you see whenever you see it.

Another recommendation is that once you have your list of things to do, you create a calendar. This will not only help you get an idea of the time you need for each thing, but it will also divide what looks like a huge task into smaller tasks, therefore making it more manageable.

2. Plan more, work less.

Once you have your lists and your materials, it’s time to get down to work. The first thing you have to do is decide what you are going to take; moving is a perfect excuse to clean the house, and give away, donate or sell all those things you never use.

Be sure to let friends and family know ahead of time, so they can lend a hand on the day of the move. The more people you have available, the less everyone will have to work.

When packaging, be sure to label your boxes well, both on the top and on the sides. To make things easier, do not just put what is in the box (clothes, books, etc.) but also the room in which they are supposed to go. Using a colour code will make it easy for you to distinguish the boxes at a glance, and probably make the move more fun for your kids, if you have them.

If you want to go one step further, put numbers in all the boxes, and make a list with what goes in each number. That way, if you need something specific in your new home before you’ve had a chance to sort everything, you can find it in a matter of seconds.

Remember to take pictures of things that you want to replicate in your new home, such as the decoration of a room in particular, or the location of the cables in your electronic devices (remember that you will have to reconnect them).

3. Start packing soon.

Do not leave everything for the last day; starting little by little will help you make the moving process much less stressful, and it will also help you to organize yourself better.

Start with things you do not use on a day-to-day basis, such as seasonal clothes or decorative items. The latter can give you many headaches, since they usually have strange shapes, and tend to be fragile.

Then, take care of the rooms you use less, such as the guest bedroom, the storage room or the garage. The things you use daily should be left for the last day, and essential things (like medication) should be kept separate.

The boxes shouldn’t exceed twelve kilograms of weight, for the sake of your back and that of whomever is helping you. Use large boxes for things that weigh less, such as sheets and clothes, and small boxes for things that weigh more, like books.

4. Do not forget the paperwork.

Organize all your important documents and put them all in the same folder, briefcase or box. Make at least one copy, and if you can digitize them, even better. It can be a tedious process, but change can be very chaotic, and losing your passport, diploma, or any other important paper is worse.

Also make sure to update your address everywhere; ID, bank account, and even Amazon. Surely you do not want letters that can contain personal information reach the next person who resides at your previous address.

If you change town or city, do not forget to register yourself; you will need it to get a family doctor or to vote on the new place, and it is also mandatory if you are going to spend more than six months in one place, so do not take too long.

5. Prepare for the arrival to your new home.

If you have the opportunity to do so, familiarize yourself with the area in which you will live before moving. Take note of the type of neighbourhood, as well as where the main services are located; supermarket, pharmacy, public transport, medical centres… and of course, check out the bars and restaurants in the area, and the general leisure offer.

There are also a series of questions you can ask the previous owner / builder to make your life easier, such as:

– Where is the shut-off valve for the water line?

– Where are the gas and electricity meters?

– Is there any surface that needs to be cleaned in a special way?

– With what company did they have electricity, gas, etc.?

– Where is the thermostat?

At the time of moving, remember to make a suitcase with essential items (toothbrush, pyjamas, medicines, laptop, some clothes) for the first couple of days.

Finally, and although it seems silly, we recommend that you make the bed as soon as you get home. You will thank it at the end of the day; there are few things more exhausting than moving day.
