Beaches of Torrevieja: Do you know them?

Tomorrow the summer begins oficially, and although you can enjoy the beaches of Torrevieja almost all year round, we want to take the opportunity to write about our amazing beaches. North to south, from Playa de la Mata to Cala Piteras, there’s plenty of coastline to see in Torrevieja, and in this post we tell you all about it.

Playa de la Mata

According to the researcher and biologist Juan Antonio Pujol, La Mata is named like that thanks to a huge specimen of mastic that existed in the area; a Mediterranean species that thrives in calcareous and saline soils by the sea.

Located in the hamlet with which it shares its name, Playa de La Mata has an extension of several kilometres, which makes it the ideal beach for those who enjoy long walks in the sand. That said, the beach also has a wide range of entertainment, from the typical beach bars to pedal boats for rent, as well as the promenade and multiple restaurants. In addition, it is accessible to those with reduced mobility.

This year it wasn’t awarded the blue flag, but the beach of La Mata has had the award through the previous years, and still is a beach with very clean waters and unbeatable quality.

Playa de los Locos

The Playa de los Locos receives its curious name from the Sanatorium Virgen del Carmen, a hospital for the mentally ill set up by Dr. Mariano Ruiz Cánovas in 1910, which treated mental illness with revolutionary methods for the time and was open until after the end of the Civil War.

Like most beaches in Torrevieja, Los Locos has very calm and clean waters, which combined with its proximity to the city centre makes it a perfect beach to visit with children.

It has also been awarded the blue flag this year, which as you know, is synonymous with quality.

Playa del Cura

The Playa del Cura is possibly the most famous and busiest beach of Torrevieja, being an urban beach of fine sand with a large number of services within reach, located near the centre and allowing cultural and beach tourism easily.

Once again, the origin of his name is uncertain, since there are very few historical references to it. There is a story of oral transmission that says a priest drowned in its waters, and the name is known to be very old; the earliest mention, according to the official chronicler of Torrevieja, is found in nautical charts of 1870.

Despite being one of the most populated beaches in Torrevieja, it also has the blue flag award, due to the careful way it’s tended to. The sand is looked after throughout the year and its natural seasons are respected, such as the arrival of the dead Posidonia Oceanica, which protects the sand from possible storms.

Paseo Juan Aparicio

Although technically it’s not a beach, we include El Paseo Juan Aparicio, popularly called “de las Rocas”, as it has natural pools in which one can bathe and enjoy the sea and the sun. Especially suitable for those who, like yours truly, love the sea but cannot stand the sand.

Although it isn’t possible to grant a blue flag to these waters, the municipality of Torrevieja is responsible for maintaining the quality of the water intact, which can be checked on their website.

And for those who prefer to walk, there is much to enjoy, from the way it’s lit to the beautiful bronze statues of the area, including the famous “Bella Lola”.

Playa de Los Náufragos

Despite its ominous name, Playa de los Náufragos is a great place to visit with the whole family; it’s not only accessible, but also has a palm tree area and a small park in the sand for the little ones to enjoy.

Thanks to its location far from the city centre, it’s one of the quietest beaches in Torrevieja. In addition, for those who are curious about the salt industry of Torrevieja, right next to its beach there’s one of the famous salt conveyor belts. Also, of course, it was awarded the blue flag for its cleanliness and quality.

The name of the beach is explained by itself; due to the currents and topography of the beach, at the time it was the place where the majority of wrecked ships came to land, where what could be salvaged from them was rescued and recycled.

Cala Piteras

Located in the south end of Torrevieja, and with a width of 15 meters, Cala Piteras is another of the small immaculate paradises of Torrevieja. With its clear sands and its calm waters, it also has the blue flag award, which is why we have included it in this list.

It also has one of the most important Posidonia meadows in the area, which delights divers and swimmers, and keeps the waters very clean.

It is a semi-urban beach that has accessibility for people with reduced mobility, a clean point, three beach bars and a Red Cross post: Perfect to enjoy a holiday without complications.

Torrevieja has so much coastline to enjoy that we have left some things in the pipeline, such as the Acequión or the multiple inlets that lie between La Mata and Los Locos. However, from Inmokea we invite you to visit them all, and discover which is your most cherished place on the Torrevieja coast. Sure we can help you find a house near your favourite beach, so you can enjoy it as much as you want.
